Unless you have been living under a rock for the last month you will know all too well that the Rio 2016 Olympics is in full carnival swing. It has been an eventful first week in this year’s mega sporting competition; from painful leg breaks in gymnastics to spectacular achievements in the men’s rugby 7’s for Fiji (who are today celebrating their first ever gold with a national holiday) and of course the machine that it is Michael Phelps. Who judging by social media is going to be staring in the next set of star wars films.
As a university with a vast sporting heritage, Leeds Beckett has been and still is host to a long list of Olympians and professional sports people, in a wide variety of sporting disciplines.
Some of our athletes currently in Rio representing their respective countries and Leeds Beckett include:
Sarah Barrow – 10m platform (diving): BSc [Hons] Sport & Exercise Science.
Alistair Brownlee – Triathlon: MSc Finance.
Emily Scarratt – Captain, rugby 7’s: BSc [Hons] Sport and Exercise Science.
Yona Knight-Wisdom – 3m spring board (diving): BSc [Hons] Sport and Exercise Science.
